Space projects that are out of this world

13 October 2021

Another Blue Origin rocket made its way into space today, this time with actor William Shatner on board.

The first time I watched one of these launches, which was just over 4 years ago now, I was sitting next to an actual (retired) astronaut throughout the stream and I remember being beside myself with excitement. While one day I still hope to hear that (responsible) space travel is open to the masses, I’ll settle for bringing the stars down to earth for now. I’ve picked some of my favorite projects from Design Space (no pun intended this time, really!) to share with you.

Filling up wall space

Whether you’re into planets and rocketships or the phases of the moon, there’s plenty of ways to dress up some blank walls. This wall decal adds pops of color for a fun space — especially for kids rooms — and Smart Materials can help make this long cut easier to apply.

Moon phase designs also add great energy to a room. The one I included below is more subtle, but uses patterned materials for texture. Attaching these cut-outs to a string or wire lets me use them as a garland or mobile.

Over the moon for this nightlight

I love a good nightlight, and this one is great. Patterned to emulate the moon, the soft glow almost makes me wish I could keep the light on all the time.

A space for every drink

A set of coasters works perfectly for a colorful (and educational) display of the planets. Try a mix of Infusible Ink transfer sheets and pens or markers for planet colors and names. Don’t limit yourself to just a set of four either. Create more coasters to extend your design and make other parts of the universe (like Pluto).

A space for your thoughts (and stuff)

Space enthusiasts of all ages will love these 2D rocket ship designs. You can use vinyl or iron-on (HTV) to apply to things like notebooks, phone cases, or drawstring backpacks for show off your out-of-this-world interests.

I need space (shirts)

I can’t talk about space projects without highlighting some of my favorite shirt designs. As you can probably tell if you’ve read this far, I love a good pun. There’s no shortage of space-themed shirt projects in Cricut Design Space, and there are even more images than ready-made projects.
