It’s hard to imagine the resourceful Beth Kingston of Kingston Crafts ever having trouble expressing herself or finding creative inspiration. Think gowns, old crystal glasses, jewelry with inspirational phrases, upcycled furnishings, a cherished quilt, and vinyl everywhere. The imaginative designer created Gold projects exclusive to the Cricut Explore Air™ Gold Edition machine that reflect her easy yet glamourous style. We talked to Beth to find out more about her designs and the influences in her life.
Describe your personal style.
I am an either/or girl. I’m either in jeans and a sweater, or I am in a ball gown, and I love both just as much! I “dress” our house much the way I dress myself. Our home is comfortable, welcoming, and tells a story with just a hint of glamour. You can put your feet up on the coffee table that my husband built out of an old factory cart while I serve you a cocktail in my grandmother’s crystal wine glasses! And one of our Great Danes will try to lick your face the entire time. Classy. 😉
Where do you look for inspiration?
I have an actual notebook (a plastic three-ring binder) where I keep pages from magazines, photos I love, quotes I’ve written down, etc., going back YEARS. I love to sit on the couch and leaf through it to recharge my creativity—it’s like an old-school Pinterest!
Is there someone in your family who taught or inspired you to be creative?
I come from a long line of creative women. One of the things I treasure most in this world is a quilt. The squares were stitched by my great grandmother (who died long before I was born), the squares were sewn together by my grandmother, and the entire thing was quilted by my mother and the ladies in her church quilting bee. Can you imagine such an incredible gift? I am the luckiest girl in the world.
What do you think of when you hear the word "gold"?
Sparkle, luxury, fun, glamour. Also, we live about 10 minutes from Fort Knox, so when I hear the word “gold” I think of the James Bond movie Goldfinger. Is that weird?
Tell us a little about your design inspiration for your gold projects.
I am ALL about simple. I want people to be able to create something fun and beautiful without spending hours slaving away or feeling like they need to learn 20 new techniques. Geometric shapes are always go-to designs for me, so being able to turn them in to cool, easy projects was a must.
The word bracelet and necklace set was actually a project I created for myself as a reminder for the New Year (to be bold and brave and to always feel beautiful), but then I thought, “I can’t be the only one who needs this.” So I’m putting it out there for every other woman who needs a little kick in the pants (or fun piece of jewelry) to remember how amazing she is.
What is your favorite material to cut with the Cricut?
I will vinyl anything that is not nailed down. When we moved to our new house, I put vinyl on the front door (both sides), trashcans (indoor and out), mailbox, mirrors, walls, dog food containers, EVERYTHING. Although, after creating the Gold projects, leather and gold foil might be creeping up into first place!
What is your favorite tip or trick for using the Cricut?
I am OBSESSED with the weld and slice features in Design Space. For people who want to “make their own” images but aren’t comfortable starting from scratch, these two features are amazing. I can’t tell you how many custom shapes I’ve created—it takes just a few seconds and your own imagination!
What is your favorite Cricut software feature?
I can’t tell you how many times Make It Now projects have saved me in a pinch. Or sometimes when I feel like my creative mojo has taken a little vacation, I can scroll through and be inspired. And then actually MAKE something by just clicking a button!
If someone were thinking about trying Cricut for the first time, what would you want them to know?
That they can try before they buy! Get in to the software (it is FREE!) and really play around in it. Check out the Make It Now projects, look at the thousands upon thousands of images available, create your own projects, try out all the cool features. You will fall in love with it before you even buy the machine. I can’t wait for you to get started!
