When Midnight Falls at Eight: Celebrating New Year’s with Kids

December 14, 2016 • Contributor: Scarlet Letters Copywriting

Life with children: it’s a party… just not the kind you used to go to. And that’s okay! New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, and we hope you’ll seize the day and celebrate in style with your loved ones of all ages. Check out these fantastic, family-friendly ways for you and yours to ring in 2017 together.

We love this idea from the website Organize and Decorate Everything: countdown bags! Every hour, kids get to open the corresponding bags that are filled with projects, goodies and snacks. It’s a great way to pass the time because— let’s face it—when they’re happy, you’re happy.

It’s not really a party unless someone (or everyone!) is wearing crazy hat. You can access this fun and festive project right now in Design Space!

Bubbly for everyone! We can’t get enough of La Croix’s fabulous flavored sparkling water, and they’re upping the ante this season with an impressive selection of holiday mocktail recipes. Cheers to that!

Confetti crackers are a tradition in the U.K., and we think they should be a part of everyone’s holiday celebration. They bring a burst of excitement to any gathering, and you can even make your own! Access the project in Design Space, and you’re sure to bring in the New Year with a bang.

“Bling in the New Year” with a fabulous t-shirt like this one from the Etsy shop OliverOliviaApparel. If you’re feeling creative, use your Cricut to make matching ones for the whole family. And if you’re not, order them online… we won’t tell, we promise.

Whatever your plans for the evening, whether you’ll be celebrating with a hundred of your closest friends or counting down the hours with just your immediate family, you’ll want to capture the event for posterity. Use these quirky photo props to lighten the mood and make even the most camera-shy guest feel bold because, really, everyone looks better with a paper mustache. These are waiting for you now in Design Space

Unplug, unwind and read in the New Year, no screens allowed. Each member of the family dons their favorite pair of pajamas, turns off their phone and spends the evening with tried and true friends such as Harry Potter, Ramona Quimby or Matilda. Bliss!

If you’re feeling social, set the scene at your New Year’s Eve dinner table with a noisemaker centerpiece. Guests of all ages will be charmed by this whimsical yet easy-to-achieve idea. We especially love this one from the incomparable Martha Stewart.

Everyone knows that the holidays bring good eats, and what could be more perfect for New Year’s Eve than Midnight Cookies? (And we strand by this even if you’ll be in dreamland when the clock strikes 12!) We love this decadent recipe from the Baking Makes Things Better website.

Take a hike. Or at least, go for a walk. Get some fresh air, let the little ones stretch their legs and enjoy the neighborhood’s holiday decorations one last time.  After a month of sweet treats and parties, everyone will benefit from a little exercise.

If midnight is happening at eight, why not set up a world time zone, where you and your little ones can monitor the different times around the globe? These simple projects are available now in Design Space!

There’s still plenty of time left for you to plan the New Year’s Eve celebration that’s perfect for you and your loved ones. Knowing that you’ll be asleep at midnight doesn’t mean that you still can’t have a blast!
