Metallics have had a very strong presence in the fashion and home décor marketplace for the past few years. Initially, as far as fashion was concerned, I fought this trend. I rocked my silver Tiffany charm bracelet in 2001 and swore off gold for good! Gold flatware?! That was for grandmas and bad yard sales! Against my mother’s advice, I ended my relationship with yellow tones and “Gold Into Cash” became my new best friend. Well, years later, time, fashion and my opinions have definitely changed. Most of my silver jewelry has been stored away (not sold this time!) and replaced by golds and rose golds. Now, filling in for silver, I’ve invited a new, red- headed bestie. Her name is Copper, and she is fabulous!
Copper has been showing up everywhere over the past two years – fashion, cosmetics, electronics and especially home décor. Based on what I’ve seen in stores, trend sites and the mean streets of NYC, copper is large and in charge. It is also still dominating magazine spreads in both current and upcoming issues (we’re currently shooting December 2016 in the editorial world, so I have the inside scoop!).
A little bit of copper can give a room or an outfit a modern edge AND works really well as a neutral. Many colors pair quite well with copper. Right now, I’m really loving copper paired with pastels like peachy pinks, mint greens and light blues. It also looks amazing with black, white, flax and deep blues.
How can you translate this trend into your personal style? That’s the easy part! You can start with a literal dip of the toe. I love a copper pedicure for the Fall. These are a few of my favorite polishes: Chanel “Cavaliere” and Nars “Delos.”
You can also add a little shimmer to your make-up. Bobbi Brown’s “Sunkissed Gold” eyeshadow palette is everything!!!
Bring some copper to the office. I don’t know about you, but I still use an actual paper journal. The copper journal and pen case made by Poppin make me happy to take notes.
It’s copper time! Apple has even jumped on the copper bandwagon. I heart the copper (rose gold) Apple watch. Skagen is also making some great copper watches. At $175.00, they‘re not too much of a “time commitment.”
Another way? How about a few home accents? Add a copper throw pillow or two to your couch. Create a vignette within your bookshelf. Put a favorite picture in a copper frame. Swap out that tired side table lamp with something shiny and new. For affordable, on-line accessible and non-committal home updates, I am a big fan of CB2 and West Elm. Below are some of my favorites in these stores now:
On the higher end side, Designer Tom Dixon has a gorgeous selection of copper bowls, vases and barware. I found these available at one of my favorite NYC haunts, ABC Home. They are also available at abchome.com.
Not wanting to change your home décor? Copper isn’t your makeup/ toe nail polish color? Can’t see yourself in copper accessories? You can still come to this party. Or, you can throw one! Set up your next hors d’oeuvres platter on a copper tray. Make some Moscow Mules! Swap your old salad tongs for some copper ones instead. Illuminate your house with copper votives.
My final recommendation is an old classic: Copper Pots. In my dream kitchen, I have this copper collection from Mauviel. In this same dream, I am wearing Christian Dior, my hair is perfectly blown out and my dishes wash themselves.
Next Week: Tired of birds, deer and hedgehogs?! My next post will feature what the marketplace will have "in store" for us in 2017. I will be giving you a full report on my visit to NY NOW – one of the largest home décor and gift shows in the U.S.!
Style disclaimer: I will never tire of deer.
