Natalie Malan’s graceful designs have been charming fans around the globe, and it’s no wonder: her watercolor images and fonts are perfect for celebrating life’s most special moments. She earned a BFA in illustration from BYU in 2003 and had an impressive career as a professional illustrator before making her own brand. She even worked at Cricut’s parent company, Provo Craft, for a while! As she is a mom of four small children, we were delighted to share some time from her busy schedule to talk about her most recent Watercolor Wedding Vows collection and where she draws her inspiration.

Describe your personal style.
I’d describe it as very bright, clean and colorful. I love things that have movement and are cheerful!
You’re known for your lovely watercolor pieces, and we’re thrilled to be highlighting some of your wedding projects. What wedding trends or styles do you find particularly exciting?
I love all the modern florals that are popping up now. They’re really dramatic and make a statement. I also think it’s amazing how people are choosing one floral design for a pretty focal point and then keeping things simple around it. It works for place settings, centerpieces and all sorts of things.
What was your source of inspiration for this collection?
I became an avid gardener after the birth of my second child and just really had a longing to always be out in the dirt. I’d get up early in the morning and head to the nursery before most people were awake. They knew me by name, and I got Yard of the Month twice! It made me so happy. It was about that time that I started doing my watercolor florals, and I just love them. I include them in so many projects now.
Did you take a big role in making the items for your own wedding?
Yes. I did my invitations, place settings…well, pretty much all of it. And at that time, I had to cut everything out by hand. It was so time consuming and actually forced me to have a smaller wedding of just 100 people because I wanted everything to look perfect. But, it was amazing and beautiful. Today, the whole process would be so much easier with Cricut!
Plan early! I also love the idea of creating a mock-up table so you can see how everything is going to be laid out and easily make changes before you invest a lot of time. Design Space can save files for you so you can experiment with sizes and things. It’s really handy.
What is your favorite aspect of using the Cricut?
I love it all! I guess if I had to narrow it to one it would be the Print and Cut feature because I had been wishing and hoping for that one for a while before it appeared. And now, I can add all sorts of aspects and color and texture to my work that I never could before. I also adore the wireless app. With four kids, I can take my projects with me and access them anywhere. If one of them has an activity, I can keep another occupied. And then we can go home and print it out!
Do you have any advice for someone just starting out with the Cricut machine?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! The people at Customer Support are so nice and helpful. There are also so many good tutorials out there that can get you on the right track. The Make It Now features are fantastic. They give you beautiful results.
Thanks, Natalie! We can’t wait to see what your garden inspires you to make next!
